Details

Cycle the City Camp is 8am to 12pm Labor Day - September 5th Where: Westenfield Park Who: Kinder to 5th Grade Students BEGINNER CYCLE THE CITY CAMP Structure: AYF’s Beginner Biking Camp is for kids age 4 and up who are just learning to ride (without training wheels), and for kids who already know how to ride but need help with basic skills like controlled starting and stopping, turning, maneuvering, changing speeds, and gearing. Kids will learn biking laws, the “rules of the road,” how to ride safely with a group, and AYF’s Biking Communication System when “riding as a team.” The camp meets at the Sanctuary, and the first 3-4 days will include activities, drills, and games in and around the park to develop basic skills and an understanding of safe riding practices. The week concludes with rides along Johnson Creek Trail and in the Tarrytown neighborhood. You can do both Fit N' Fun and Beginner Cycle the City, but you'll need to deliver bikes to park and campers will walk with coaches from WAYA to Westenfield Park. CYCLE THE CITY CAMP Structure: Cycle the City Camp will start with a review of all bicycle safety procedures as well as ways for bikers to maintain their bikes. From Sanctuary, we will head on our bikes down the Johnson Creek Trail and other bike lanes to popular destinations around Austin. We will visit Zilker Park, Barton Springs, Pease Park, Austin Nature Center, and other great destinations like these. Campers will need their own bike (all-terrain, hybrid, mountain bike) helmet, and a water bottle cage on bike (not required). Bikers should be comfortable biking 1.5 to 2 miles before a rest stop.
