Walking and Biking To School Safety

Walking and biking to school is a great way for students and parents to get some exercise before the day begins while increasing your brain activity. It's important to follow a few safety rules when walking or biking to school. Please feel free to share these with your kiddos so they can be prepared when hitting the road.

Walking to School Safety

Picture
When walking to school...
  • Always walk with a parent or with a friend.
  • Plan a safe route to walk and practice this route.
  • Walk on sidewalks if they are available.
  • If there is not a sidewalk available, you want to walk on the left side of the street (so you can see oncoming traffic).
  • Do not play, pass a ball, or shove when walking to school.
  • Look both ways before crossing an intersection.
  • Wear bright clothes so you can be seen by cars.
  • Use a crosswalk, stoplight, or intersection to cross busy streets.
  • Obey all traffic signs and crossing guards.
  • Don't take rides from strangers.
  • Have a great walk!!!

Biking to School Safety

When biking to school...
  • Always bike with a parent or friends, and always bike with a secure fitting helmet on.
  • Before biking, check the ABC's on your bike. Tires should have plenty of AIR in them (read the PSI on the outside of the tube). The BRAKES should work on both front and back tires if applicable. The CHAIN should be on the gears and free of rust and dirt.
  • Plan a safe route to bike on and practice this route.
  • Use a bike lane if they are present. If there is no bike lane, use a sidewalk or bike on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic.
  • Ride in a single file line and not next to your friend.
  • Follow ALL traffic signs and walk your bike across any crosswalk.
  • Yield to any pedestrians you see walking or running.
  • Keep both hands on the hand bars except when using turn signals. Don't forget to signal at each turn.
  • Have fun biking!!!
