Spring Kick-Off Meeting

1/18/2014

Thanks to everyone who made it out to our coach's meeting on Thursday, January 16th. We came up with some great ideas, one of them being creating a Coach's Corner to share ideas. Here is what took place at our meeting Monday:
  • The following people representing the following schools were in attendance: Brandon Batiansila (Casis), Laura Dooley (Gullett), Hannah Roberts (Bryker Woods & Doss), Paul Books (Doss), Stephen Smith (Biking & Bryker Woods), Jason Schafer (Hill), Emily Cunningham (Biking), & Larry Chauvin.
  • I let everyone know Young Guns became an LLC over the summer (YG ATX, LLC). Creating an LLC makes sure we are all well protected legally. We also are making sure we have everyone's paperwork filed properly for now and the future.
  • Shared a Coach's Contact List (Posted below in a PDF). If you are going to be out, please make sure you let me know and try to find a sub for your group.
  • I shared Young Gun's goals for 2014.

GOALS:
- Meet as a group of coaches twice a semester (once before groups start and once towards the end)
- Collaborate more with other YG's coaches as well as other Austin runners
- Continue to acknowledge our runners from all our groups with Athlete of the Month
- Continue to market our groups to new audiences with postcards and flyers
- Sponsor an exchange station for the Run to the Sun ($500 donation)
LONG TERM GOALS:
- Have a part of YG's as a nonprofit status
- Create a high school scholarship (two $500 scholarships a year)
- Create a kids Duathlon (possibly at Camp Mabry)
  • We then shared ideas for activities with our groups. The idea came up to have a blog, like this one, so others can comment, share ideas, and get ideas to add to their groups.  I will add these games to this webpage and update regularly.
  • We talked about different equipment we might need or want. If you have any equipment needs, please let me know!
  • We discussed discipline and what is working when participants are not behaving/participating. We always want kiddos to be safe, so if they need to sit out for a bit for behavior or are tired, this is not a problem as long as they are in a clear line of sight. Please use the parent contact list to contact parents if there is a consistent issue with a participant.
  • We also talked about having YG's traditions at every group. This way when we collaborate more, kids from all of our groups will know what to expect and terminology will be similar.

    YG's Mission:

Our focus is on improving running & biking endurance and overall fitness, develop
"functional" strength, flexibility, and improve core strength and body alignment. Further, participants will likely see improvements in self- image, confidence, attitude, social-interpersonal- relationship-skills, as well as ability to focus on tasks and schoolwork.

    YG's Group Rules

    1. Make sure you check in with a coach when you get to YG's
    2. Make sure you stay with the group at all times
    3. Be ready to run and have some fun every time
    4. Try your best, work to improve, and encourage others
    5. Don't leave YG's without first signing out with a YG's coach

    YG's Warm-Up

    1. Fast Feet
    2. Jumping Jacks
    3. Star Jumps
    4. Push-ups
    5. Squats

    YG's Traditions

Here are some traditions we'd like to try to use across all groups.
    - To help with pacing, animal terms:
    • Turtle - Walk
    • Bear - Jog
    • Horse - Run
    • Cheetah - Sprint
    - Always have a game for the last 10 to 15 minutes
    - Last 2 to 3 minutes as an entire group to share announcements.
    - If there are any upcoming birthdays or events runners are running in, participants circle around the honoree, run in place, and the person in the middle shouts out Young while the runners around the circle shout guns (repeat 4 to 5 times)
